Drawing the Head in Charcoal

Article text
Tutor: Robert Nelmes

This course explores the use of charcoal as an ideal medium to use when drawing the head. It has the flexibility needed, can be pushed around the paper with ease, enabling the artist to make adjustments and try out tone and line with out fear of failure.

If you’re having trouble getting sucked into the detail and your drawing is missing a sense of volume and form then this class will help you see past them. Establish the proportion and form, then pick out the details that add character and likeness.

• Anatomy of the head.
• Seeing the form through value.
• Edit the details.
• Selecting the highlight and focus.
